About RPL

The inaugural season of the Rugby Premier League (RPL), a franchise-based league, will be held in India in June 2025. In the first-ever tournament of its kind in the country, RPL will feature some of the world's finest rugby players from every major sevens playing nation, alongside India's finest talent. With the reputed group, GMR, joining as the Organising and Marketing Partner through its subsidiary GMR Sports, RPL presents a credible, exciting and new property on the international sevens calendar.

Vision

  • To make rugby one of the five top-of-mind sports for India's youth to play.
  • To create a realistic professional and financial pathway for the country's youth, so that they are incentivized to pursue an international rugby career.
  • To make rugby one of the most exciting sports on television. The fact that India's youth in 322 out of a total of approximately 760 districts play rugby is little known as the sport has never been adequately featured in mass media.
  • To increase sponsor interest in rugby exponentially through the RPL, by reaching out to a young, aspirational, energetic demographic - 21 years to 35 years.
  • To utilize the money and opportunities presented by the league to build on the 'Nursery to Nation' concept - a high-performance program that will start at the grassroots and aspire to India qualifying for the Olympics in 2032 and 2036.
